Susan Foulkes’ Cheerful Band of Mug Mats pattern in Nordic Hands uses West Country whipping to secure the end of each woven band. The video above gives a great demonstration of the technique with all the steps and a good view of what’s going on. Originally used to keep ropes from unravelling, this technique is also a great end protector for braided bands and fringes, such as you might have on a woven rug.

(Fun Fact: I was going to call Susan’s project “A Merry Band of Mug Mats,” which I think has nice alliteration. Alas, my beloved editor said it sounded too much like Robin Hood. Which was exactly the point: Susan is British, and I thought a little Robin Hood allusion would have been fun. Ah, well.)
